flying in wind ? how do you actually get better at it

  • Members

so ive been flying for about 8 months now and wind is still the thing that gets me every time. like anything above 15mph and i start second-guessing every stick input. i fly a mavic 3 mostly and yeah it handles wind fine on paper but that doesnt mean i know what im doing when a gust hits mid-flight.

what i keep running into is this thing where i overcorrect ? wind pushes the nose and i jab the stick too hard and then im chasing the aircraft instead of flying it. my instructor told me to "relax your inputs" which okay fine but thats easier said than done when the thing is drifting toward a tree line.

is there like a specific way people practice this or do you just... fly in wind a lot until it clicks? i tried doing figure 8s in moderate wind the other day and it helped a little but im not sure if thats the right drill or if im just burning battery time without actually building muscle memory the right way

figure 8s are actually a solid drill yeah, but the thing that helped me way more was doing slow nose-in circles in crosswind. forces you to constantly compensate on both sticks at the same time and you cant just autopilot through it. do it at like 10-15 feet AGL so you're close enough to really see the drift happening in real time rather than trying to read it from altitude where everything looks stable until it isn't.

the overcorrection thing is super common and honestly it just takes time. what helped me was consciously slowing my thumb speed down ? like physically making myself do half the input i thought i needed and then waiting a beat to see what the aircraft actually does. felt wrong at first but after a few sessions it started feeling more natural. wind flying is mostly about learning to trust the FC to do some of the work and not fighting it.

i had the same problem for ages. honestly what changed it for me was switching to sport mode for practice sessions in calm conditions first ? not because sport mode is better in wind, obviously it isnt, but because the more direct stick response kind of forced me to be smoother or the aircraft would be all over the place. then when i went back to normal/cinesmooth the inputs felt way less twitchy and i wasnt overcorrecting as much. probably not for everyone but it worked for me
