switching from aluminium to carbon frame ? worth the hassle or am i overthinking it

  • Members

so ive been flying the same aluminium frame for a while now and its fine, honestly its been pretty durable but ive had a few people at the field tell me im leaving performance on the table by not running full carbon. the thing is i already have my stack dialed in, VTX placement sorted, i know exactly where everything sits and swapping frames feels like starting over. my gopro mount is also kind of custom-rigged and i dont want to redo all that.

is the actual flight characteristic difference noticeable enough to justify it? like i get that carbon is stiffer and lighter but im flying mostly cruisy lines, not really throwing it into hard gaps or anything. feels like the carbon argument is always made by people who are way better pilots than me and im not sure it applies the same way at lower skill levels. anyone made this switch and had thoughts either way?

honestly for cruisy freestyle the difference is real but its not night and day if your tune is already decent. carbon stiffness does help with prop wash handling because the frame isnt flexing and adding weird harmonics into the gyro readings ? but if youre not pushing hard transitions you probably wont notice much. where you WILL notice is weight, carbon is just lighter and that affects how the quad responds to inputs, feels more immediate.

that said if your whole build is dialed and you're happy with how it flies i wouldn't touch it just because someone at the field said so. those guys always want everyone on the newest thing

i made this exact switch last year, went from an aluminium to a TBS Source One and yeah the tune needed a redo because the PID response was completely different. took me a weekend to get it feeling right again. if you do switch, export your current diff all and use it as a starting point but expect to spend time on filters. the carbon frame actually made my blackbox logs way cleaner which was satisfying to see even if i couldnt feel every bit of it in the sticks
