ok so ive been flying my mini 3 for a few months now and i live pretty close to a regional airport, not like a major one just a small one that does mostly prop planes and some charters. my dji fly app keeps showing this orange zone and sometimes it lets me unlock it automatically and sometimes it says i need authorization and im honestly not sure whats happening half the time.

i submitted a LAANC request through airmap once and it got approved instantly and i thought great thats all i need but then i read something that said LAANC isnt available at all airports and some places you have to do a manual FAA waiver which takes like 90 days?? is that true. also does the authorization from LAANC cover me legally if something goes wrong or is it just like... permission to fly and the responsibility is still all on me

basically just trying to figure out if im doing this right and not accidentally committing a federal crime every time i go out lol

yeah LAANC is only available at airports that have participated in the program, not every single one. smaller regional fields especially the ones with no control tower sometimes arent in the system at all, and for those you do need to go through DroneZone on the FAA website and file for a Part 107 waiver or a recreational flyer authorization depending on what you are. the 90 day thing is real for some waivers but just a basic airspace authorization request can sometimes come back in a few days, its not always that long.

and yeah the LAANC approval is real legal authorization, it means the FAA has cleared you to fly in that specific area up to a certain altitude for a certain time window. you still have to fly safely and follow all the other rules obviously, it doesnt give you a blank check. but if you got auto-approved through the app you should be good for that session. just make sure you save some kind of record of it.

same situation here honestly, the orange vs red zones in the dji app drove me crazy when i started. one thing i learned the hard way is that the dji app unlocking doesnt always mean you have actual FAA authorization, sometimes its just dji removing their own geofence restrictions which is a separate thing. like dji has their own system on top of whatever the FAA requires. so you might be legal with dji but still need a LAANC approval technically. i use aloft now instead of airmap and its been a bit clearer for me at least
