so ive been doing mapping work for a few local farms for about a year now, mostly using DroneDeploy on a Mavic 3 Enterprise and its been fine but i keep hearing people say Pix4D is way more accurate for the kind of NDVI and multispectral stuff i want to get into. the thing is Pix4D is like significantly more expensive depending on which tier you need and i genuinely cant figure out if the outputs are that much better or if its more of a workflow preference thing.

my current work is pretty basic ? orthomosaics, some elevation models, nothing crazy. but i have a client who wants more detailed crop health analysis and im wondering if i should just invest in Pix4D or if DroneDeploy has gotten good enough that its not really a conversation anymore. anyone actually run both on the same dataset and compared outputs?

ran both on the same flight data about 8 months ago, sugarcane field, dual camera setup. honestly the point cloud density from Pix4D was noticeably better, like you could actually see row structure in the DSM that DroneDeploy kind of smoothed over. but for basic NDVI visualization DD is totally fine and the dashboard is way easier to hand to a client who doesnt know anything about photogrammetry.

if you're doing serious agronomy work where the actual numbers matter ? canopy height models, plant counts, that kind of thing ? Pix4Dfields is probably worth it. if you're just making pretty heat maps for farmers to look at, honestly DD gets you there faster with less headache. depends what your clients are actually paying for i think.

I went through this exact decision last spring and ended up going with DroneDeploy mostly because of the subscription flexibility, I didnt want to commit to an annual Pix4D contract when I wasnt sure how much mapping work I'd actually be doing. No regrets so far but I also haven't pushed it into anything super technical yet so take that for what its worth.
