so i've been flying my mini 3 pro for about 4 months now and i finally downloaded aloft (used to use airmap before they kinda died) and i'm seeing all these yellow and orange zones everywhere. i live maybe 6 miles from a small regional airport, nothing major, like small prop planes and the occasional charter flight. the thing is i got auto-approved through LAANC last week for a 100ft authorization but i wasnt sure if that means im good every time i go out there or if i need to reapply each session. i tried reading the FAA page and honestly it just made me more confused, they keep referencing part 107 but im flying recreationally so does that even apply to me?

also side question ? there's a class D ring on the map that extends pretty far out from the airport, is the LAANC authorization enough to fly in that or do i need something else. genuinely cannot figure this out

yeah you need to reauthorize each session, the LAANC approval isnt a blanket thing that covers you forever. each time you go out and fly in controlled airspace you need a new authorization, and the aloft app makes it pretty easy to just do it right before you launch. takes like 30 seconds once youre used to it.

and yes class D is covered under LAANC as long as the grid square you're flying in has an available altitude ceiling. some grids are set at 0ft which basically means no drone traffic is approved at all through the automated system and you'd have to go through a manual FAA waiver which is a whole other thing. as for part 107 vs recreational ? the LAANC system works for both, just make sure in aloft you have your profile set correctly so youre filing under recreational (section 44809) otherwise it gets weird.

this stuff confused me too when i started. one thing that tripped me up is that even outside controlled airspace you might still be in an SFRA or a national park no-fly or something that LAANC doesnt cover at all. like LAANC is specifically just for controlled airspace around airports, it doesnt help you with everything. i flew near a state park once thinking i was fine because no airspace alerts showed up and then someone told me after the fact that ground-based rules from the park service still apply. so just double check with multiple sources i guess
