so ive been doing mapping work for a mid-size construction company for about 8 months now, started out with dronedeploy because it was easier to get into and honestly the automated flight planning just worked. but a few of the engineers i work with keep pushing me toward pix4d because apparently the point cloud accuracy is better for their BIM stuff.

heres my thing though ? dronedeploy annual is already not cheap and pix4d mapper is like significantly more on top of that. ive done some test flights with a trial and yeah the outputs look cleaner, the GCP workflow is less painful, but im not sure if the delta in deliverable quality is something the client would even notice or care about unless theyre doing super precise volumetric calculations.

anyone switched between them or running both? curious what actually moved the needle for you in terms of accuracy or workflow, not just the feature list stuff.

ran dronedeploy for almost two years on a large earthworks project and then got pushed to pix4d by a client who needed the outputs to feed into their civil CAD pipeline. honestly the transition was kind of annoying at first because pix4d just has so many more settings to mess with and the processing time on desktop is way longer than cloud, but once i got the GCP workflow dialed in the accuracy improvement was real. we were hitting like 2-3cm horizontal on checkpoints vs maybe 5-6 with dd on the same site, roughly same GSD.

that said for anything that isnt super precision-critical i still think dronedeploy is actually faster end to end because the reporting tools are just ready to go and clients can see the map in the browser without needing anything installed. so it kind of depends on who youre delivering to and what theyre doing with it.

i use both depending on the job lol. dd for quick progress reports and stuff where the PM just wants to see the site from above, pix4d when someone actually needs a proper orthomosaic or DSM they can measure from. the cost is annoying but ive kind of just baked it into the per-project rate at this point.
