So ive been using DroneDeploy for about a year now on various construction sites, mostly doing progress monitoring and the occasional volumetric calc for earthworks. Works fine, no real complaints, but my company is pushing me to look at Pix4D because apparently some of the engineers want more control over the point cloud outputs and GCP workflow. The annual licensing jump is pretty significant though and I'm trying to figure out if it's actually justified or if they just want the fancier looking software.

For context we're running a Mavic 3 Enterprise on most jobs, sometimes an M300 when we need the longer flight time or need to carry the L1. GSD is usually around 2-3cm depending on flight altitude and overlap settings. The DroneDeploy outputs have been fine for what the site managers need but whenever I hand off data to the surveyors they always have notes about the accuracy report not being detailed enough or something about the bundle adjustment.

Anyone actually switched between the two for professional work and noticed a real difference in the outputs? Not talking about the UI or whatever, I mean the actual accuracy of the orthomosaic and the point cloud density.

Yeah went through exactly this about two years ago. Honestly the Pix4D outputs are better for anything that needs to hold up to scrutiny ? the accuracy reports are way more detailed and the surveyors we work with always prefer them. That said the learning curve is real, especially if youre used to DroneDeploy just doing everything automatically. Pix4D gives you so many processing options that it's easy to screw up if you dont know what youre doing with the image scale or the point cloud densification settings.

If your main use case is construction monitoring and volumetrics and the current outputs are passing QA, I'd push back on the switch unless the engineers can actually articulate what they're missing. Sometimes people just want more knobs to turn even if it doesnt change the end result much.

the bundle adjustment thing your surveyors are mentioning is probably about the tie point distribution and how well the software handles the GCP residuals in the report. DroneDeploy's accuracy report is kind of a black box compared to what Pix4D spits out. not saying one is more accurate necessarily just that Pix4D shows its work more and some surveyors need that for their own QA process or for submitting to clients.
