Need help understanding the new FCC drone regulations - what can I still buy?

I'm completely lost with all the FCC changes happening right now. On December 22, 2025, the grace period established under the NDAA 2023 American Drone Security Act expired, now completely prohibiting the purchase or use of drones made in China for virtually all federal funded projects. This includes all uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) from DJI and Autel. All existing FCC authorizations remain valid - any drone already marketed for sale within the US may continue to be sold and used in the US, including DJI models. No new DJI or foreign drone models will be authorized after December 21, 2025.

I was planning to buy my first drone - what are my options now? Can someone explain this in simple terms?

Don't panic! All existing FCC authorizations remain valid - any drone already marketed for sale within the US may continue to be sold and used in the US, including DJI models. You can still buy DJI drones that were already approved before the cutoff date. The restriction only applies to NEW models getting approval.

I'm in the same boat as you! From what I've read, certain categories of drones and components carved out two specific categories that do not pose unacceptable national security risks: Uncrewed aircraft systems and components included on the Defense Contract Management Agency's Blue UAS Cleared List and UAS and components that qualify as "domestic end products" under the Buy American Standard.

Check out companies like Parrot, Teledyne FLIR, Neros Technologies, Wingtra, Auterion, ModalAI, Zepher Flight Labs, and AeroVironment - these are approved alternatives. For beginners, I'd recommend looking at Potensic or Skydio options that are still available.
