struggling to hold position in wind, is this a skill thing or a settings thing

so ive been flying for about 8 months now and i feel pretty comfortable in calm conditions but the moment there's any real wind, like 15-20mph gusts, i just fall apart. im flying a mavic 3 classic and i know the thing is rated for higher winds than that but i keep overcorrecting and then overcorrecting the overcorrection if that makes sense. by the time i'm done fighting it the footage is garbage and im sweaty and annoyed.

i saw some people talk about changing expo curves and i messed with that a little but honestly i dont fully understand what im changing or why. is this just a matter of flying in wind more until i develop the feel for it, or is there actual technique involved? like should i be anticipating gusts differently, positioning myself differently relative to the wind direction when i take off? i feel like im missing something fundamental here.

yeah the expo thing can help but honestly for a mavic in normal mode its not gonna make a huge difference, the bigger thing is the anticipation you mentioned. what helped me most was learning to always know where the wind is coming from before i even arm the motors, like actually stop and feel it on your face, watch the grass or trees. then when youre flying keep the drone upwind of your subject as much as possible so if you lose control momentarily it drifts toward you not away.

the overcorrecting loop you described is super common. the trick is smaller inputs than you think and then wait. the drone needs a second to actually respond and people panic and add more stick before the first input has finished doing anything. takes a while to break that habit tbh.

I had the same issue for way longer than I'd like to admit. What actually clicked for me was going out specifically to practice in wind, not to get footage, just to mess around. Like set a hover target and try to hold position over it for 60 seconds without touching anything crazy. You start to feel the rhythm of how gusts come through and you stop reacting and start anticipating a little. It sounds dumb but just dedicated wind practice sessions changed it for me faster than anything else.
