almost lost my Air 2S over the lake today, heart was pounding

ok so this has been bugging me since this afternoon and i need to talk about it somewhere. was flying out over a reservoir near my house, nothing crazy, maybe 200 meters out and about 60 meters up. completely legal airspace, i checked everything. anyway i guess i had the return to home altitude set way too low because when the battery hit the warning threshold it started coming back and nearly clipped some trees on the far bank. i could see it on the screen and was just mashing the sticks trying to override but honestly panicked a bit and forgot i could just cancel RTH and fly it manually. it cleared the trees by what looked like maybe 2 meters and made it back fine but my hands were shaking after. lesson learned i guess. always check your RTH altitude before you fly somewhere new, especially if theres terrain or trees between you and the bird. i had it set to like 30m from the last time i flew at a flat open park and just never changed it. stupid mistake but glad it worked out

oof yeah that RTH altitude thing gets people more than you'd think. glad it made it back. i actually set mine to 80m by default now regardless of where im flying, just as a safety buffer. you lose a tiny bit of battery on the return but way better than the alternative. also worth double checking that the home point refreshed properly when you took off, sometimes if you arm and launch quickly it locks the home point before the GPS has a solid fix and then RTH returns to slightly the wrong spot

this is literally my nightmare scenario. i fly over water sometimes and the thought of it going down keeps me up at night haha. one thing i started doing is a quick mental checklist before every flight, RTH altitude, home point confirmed, signal strength, battery percentage. takes like 30 seconds and has saved me from doing dumb stuff at least twice. your brain just doesnt think straight in the moment when something goes wrong so having the habit beforehand helps
