ok so ive been flying my mavic for about 8 months now and i thought i had a decent handle on the rules but my buddy and i drove out to this spot we found on google maps, looked great, open field, good sight lines, and when we got there i pulled up aloft and it showed we were like 4.5 miles from a small regional airport. not a major hub or anything, just one of those little puddle jumper places. the authorization grid showed 0ft in some spots and like 200ft in others nearby.

i ended up not flying because i didnt really know what i was supposed to do. like do i submit a LAANC request through aloft or skyvector or whatever and just wait? or is it instant? ive heard some people say its automatic approval under a certain altitude but im not sure if that applies everywhere or just certain airports. also does the 0ft zone mean absolutely no flying or is there some other process for that.

we drove like an hour to get there so it was kind of a bummer. just want to understand this better before next time

so LAANC is actually pretty quick when it works ? if youre in a grid that shows any altitude above 0 you can usually get instant approval right through aloft or even the FAA's own DroneZone sometimes. the authorization is automatic below whatever ceiling the grid shows for that specific area. but the 0ft zones are a different story, those require what they call a Part 107 waiver which is a manual process and can take weeks or just get denied outright. so yeah for those spots youre basically not flying without a lot of paperwork.

also worth knowing the grid squares dont always line up with what makes intuitive sense geographically. ive had spots where literally crossing a field boundary changes you from 200ft authorized to 0ft. its frustrating but thats how it is. next time before you drive out just check the UAS Facility Maps on the FAA site and cross reference with whatever app you use, gives you a better picture before committing to the trip

i had almost the exact same thing happen last summer lol. drove out to what looked like a perfect spot and then yeah, 0ft authorization. i just ended up submitting through aloft anyway to see what happened and got rejected pretty much instantly for that grid square. the ones nearby with like 100ft ceiling went through in maybe 2 minutes though so i just moved down the road a bit and it was fine. not ideal but got some flying in at least
