my PIDs feel fine but something is still off on rolls ? cant figure it out

so this has been bugging me for a couple weeks now. running a 4S 5 inch with the Foxeer Reaper 2306 motors and a Speedybee F405 stack, betaflight 4.4. my rolls feel slightly... sticky? like not quite snappy. i did a blackbox log and looked at the P and D traces and they look reasonable to me but i'm not super experienced reading blackbox so maybe im missing something obvious.

its not oscillations, its more like the quad starts the roll fine and then kind of hesitates right at the beginning before it picks up speed. filters are at stock except i dropped the gyro lowpass a little. throttle is around 50% when im doing the rolls if that matters. its an otherwise pretty clean flier just this one thing is annoying me and ive been randomly poking at P gains for two sessions and just making it worse probably

sounds like it could be a few things but my first guess from that description is your I term is too low or your master multiplier is low. the hesitation at initiation of a roll before it snaps is often I term not holding the rate request properly. try bumping I on roll up maybe 10-15% and see if it feels more committed off the bat.

also worth checking ? is your throttle cut doing anything weird? some people have idle settings that are too low and the motors kind of lag at throttle transitions which can feel like the quad is slow to respond. not sure if thats your issue but worth ruling out. and yeah stop randomly poking P gains without blackbox open, you're just guessing at that point

had the exact same thing on my last build and it drove me insane for like three weeks. turned out my motor screws were slightly loose on one arm and it was causing just enough flex to make the response feel weird. not saying thats your problem but its worth pulling the props and just going over the whole build physically before you go deeper into the tune. embarrassing how often its something mechanical not a software thing
