so ive been running an Inspire 1 with the X5 for a while now and honestly it still does what i need 90% of the time but im starting to lose jobs to guys with newer setups and i know some of that is just sales talk but some of it is real. the Inspire 3 with the X9-8K Air is a completely different conversation when you're pitching to a DP or a production company.

my main thing is i do a mix of commercial real estate, some narrative short work, and occasionally i get brought in on bigger productions when they need aerial. the Inspire 1 footage still cuts fine in most cases but the dynamic range comparison is kinda embarrassing when you put them side by side honestly. and the whole dual operator setup on the I3 is something clients actually care about now, being able to have a dedicated camera op while i fly is huge for the more complex shots.

what i cant figure out is whether the jump in cost makes sense for where im at. the I3 body alone plus the lens situation for the X9 starts getting into territory that's hard to justify unless you're booking consistently. anyone here actually made that transition from older Inspire stuff to the 3 and noticed a real difference in the work you're getting?

made the jump about 8 months ago, coming from an Inspire 2 with X7 so not quite the same as your situation but similar enough. the honest answer is yes it matters but maybe not for the reasons you'd think. the image out of the X9 is genuinely better, the 8K raw in Prores RAW HQ is something you can really work with in post and clients notice the deliverable quality even if they cant articulate why. but the bigger thing for me was the omnidirectional obstacle avoidance and just the overall reliability in tricky environments. had a couple close calls with the I2 in tight urban spaces and the I3 handles that stuff way more confidently.

the lens cost is real though. if you're used to just having one focal length and calling it a day that's one thing but if you want to actually use the cinema lens lineup you're spending serious money fast. i mostly fly with the DL 24mm and the DL 50mm and that covers most of what i need but i had to budget for that separately from the body.

not to derail but have you looked at renting before committing? i know a few guys who rent the I3 rig when they have a job that specifically needs it and just factor it into the quote. that way you're not carrying the overhead when work is slow. might be worth running the numbers on that vs owning outright, especially if the big productions are still occasional for you
