so ive been flying whoops for about a year and finally pulling the trigger on a proper 5inch freestyle build. got the frame sorted (went with a TrueRC SOURCE ONE clone from a local shop, yeah i know, but budget is what it is) and im running a F7 stack i picked up on sale a few months ago. the FC is fine i think but the ESC is where im second guessing myself.

the ESC that came bundled is rated 45A per corner and im planning to run 2306 2450kv motors on 4S. felt like it should be fine but someone in my local group chat said i should go 60A minimum for freestyle and now im paranoid. is 45A going to be a problem or is that guy just being overly cautious. i dont want to burn an ESC on my first real build obviously but also dont want to spend another 40 bucks if i dont have to.

also any tips on motor order for soldering onto the ESC would be appreciated, ive done it on a tiny whoop board before but this will be my first time with individual motor wires and im a little nervous about it

45A is totally fine for 2306 on 4S doing freestyle, your guy is being paranoid. like yeah in theory you could spike past 45A in an extreme situation but with that kv on 4S you're not pushing enough power to regularly hit that ceiling doing normal freestyle. i ran 35A ESCs on a similar setup for months without any issues. just make sure your solder joints are clean and your motor wires arent too long, that matters way more than having headroom on the ESC rating tbh.

for soldering motor wires just tin the pads first, give them a second to cool, then tin the wire ends and join them. dont try to do it all at once with cold pads because you'll end up with a cold joint and wonder why one motor is cutting out. also use flux, seriously, makes everything easier.

what stack is it if you dont mind me asking? some of those bundled F7 stacks have ESCs that are technically rated 45A but the actual thermal performance is kind of questionable depending on the manufacturer. not saying it wont work, just that the number on the box doesnt always tell the whole story. ive had cheaper stacks where one ESC just got cooked on hard throttle punches even though it was supposedly within spec.
