thinking about dropping my Zenmuse X7 for something else ? is the image quality actually worth the payload tradeoff

ok so this has been rattling around in my head for a while. i run an Inspire 2 with the X7 and for most of the work i do its genuinely overkill but i keep telling myself the image quality justifies lugging around all that weight and dealing with the reduced flight times. lately ive been losing jobs to guys flying smaller setups who are delivering footage thats honestly pretty hard to distinguish from mine at delivery resolution.

the X7 raw files are incredible dont get me wrong, but im wondering if for 80% of commercial work the X5S or even a properly tuned Mavic 3 Pro setup would get me there with way better flexibility. the thing i keep going back and forth on is the gimbal integration ? the X7 system is so dialed in, the stabilization is stupid good. i dont know if i could get the same smoothness out of a third party gimbal solution on a smaller airframe.

curious if anyone has actually made this switch or run comparison shots between these systems in real conditions, not like a controlled youtube test

i made almost exactly this switch about a year ago, went from X7 on an Inspire to primarily using a Mavic 3 Cine for most gigs. honestly for anything thats going to end up on social, streaming platforms, or even broadcast in most cases, you cannot tell the difference in the final product. where the X7 still destroys everything else is if youre doing heavy color grading work or the client specifically needs CinemaDNG for some reason. the gimbal on the Mavic 3 is genuinely impressive though, i was skeptical but the 3-axis system they put in that thing punches way above what you'd expect from a craft that size.

the payload flexibility argument cuts both ways too ? yeah you can carry more with the Inspire platform but every lens swap is a whole thing and if youre working fast that matters

the stabilization question is the right one to be asking imo. people get hung up on sensor size and dynamic range but if your footage has even subtle instability it doesnt matter what you shot it on. ive seen X7 footage that looks worse than well-stabilized Mavic footage just because the pilot or the gimbal was having an off day. that said i think youre probably not going to replicate the X7 integration quality with any third party gimbal solution, that tight feedback loop between the aircraft IMU and the gimbal controller is doing a lot of work you cant easily recreate bolting something onto a different airframe
