so i've been doing residential and light commercial roof inspections for going on two years and i feel like my deliverable workflow is kind of all over the place still. right now im flying a Mavic 3 Enterprise, doing an automated grid mission with Drone Deploy, processing in DD and handing clients a link to the map plus a PDF with annotated screenshots of anything flagged.

it works but its not super professional looking and some of the larger property management companies ive been pitching to want something more structured. one of them asked if i could provide measurements and im not sure if the photogrammetry output from my setup is accurate enough to quote linear footage of damaged flashing or whatever with any confidence.

also the turnaround time is kind of killing me - processing takes forever on bigger commercial roofs and by the time i get the deliverable to the client they've sometimes already had someone up there manually. anyone streamlined this? wondering if its worth paying for the higher DD tier or if theres a better processing pipeline people are using. pix4d? metashape? just looking for what people who do this regularly have landed on

metashape is what i switched to after getting frustrated with DD processing times and honestly the difference is pretty noticable. you do need a decent machine to run it locally but once you're processing on your own hardware instead of waiting on cloud queues it changes the whole turnaround situation. i can usually get a processed orthomosaic and point cloud within a couple hours of landing on most commercial jobs.

for measurments - if you're doing proper GCPs you can get accuracy thats totally reasonable for quoting linear footage, like within a few inches on a well-controlled flight. without GCPs i wouldnt quote specific measurements to a client, too much liability if the number is off and they're making decisions based on it. the M3E has RTK as an option if you dont have it already, that helps a lot too.

the deliverable format thing is real though. i ended up building a report template in canva of all places, just pulls in the annotated screenshots and key metrics. looks way more polished than a raw DD link and property managers seem to respond to it better. not glamorous but it works

client asking for measurements after a drone inspection is honestly a bit of a red flag to me - not your fault, just means they dont totally understand what they're buying. i always scope the job as visual condition assessment only and if they need actual measurements for a contractor bid thats a separate conversation with a separate line item. saves a lot of grief later when someones contractor comes back with different numbers and suddenly its your problem somehow
