landing pad actually worth it or just one of those things you buy and never use

my brother keeps telling me to get a landing pad and im kind of on the fence. i mostly fly at parks and open fields, grass is usually pretty short. i get that the idea is to protect from dust and debris getting kicked up into the motors but like how much is that actually a problem in practice? feels like one of those accessories that looks cool but ends up living in the bag forever.

the ones i see recommended are usually the hoodman or the dji one, both around 20-30 bucks which isnt crazy but still, if im not gonna use it whats the point. does anyone actually bring theirs out consistently or does it end up being situational

honestly i thought the same thing before i started flying on beaches and gravel parking lots more often. on grass its probably fine without one but the first time you watch your mavic sitting in a cloud of its own rotor wash kicking up sand you'll understand why people use them. i have the hoodman one, its lightweight enough that it just stays rolled up in my bag and i dont really think about it, so it doesnt feel like dead weight.

the other thing nobody mentions is that a bright orange or yellow pad is actually super helpful as a visual reference point when you're bringing it back in from distance, especially in a field where everything looks the same. that part i didnt expect but i genuinely appreciate it now.
