switching from Inspire 1 to Inspire 3 for episodic work ? worth the jump?

so ive been shooting with the Inspire 1 + X5R for a while now, mostly episodic documentary stuff and some commercial work, and honestly it still holds up better than people give it credit for but im starting to feel the limitations creep in especially with the gimbal lock during aggressive moves and the whole single operator situation getting old real fast.

been looking hard at the Inspire 3 and the jump to the Zenmuse X9-8K is obviously massive, the full frame sensor alone changes the conversation entirely when youre delivering to streaming platforms that are actually checking your sensor size now. but the price tag is just brutal. like genuinely hard to justify unless you're booking at a certain rate consistently.

curious if anyone has made this transition specifically for long form narrative or doc work rather than commercials, because i feel like the use cases are pretty different and most reviews i find are people doing car shoots and stuff. also how are people handling the dual operator workflow on the 3, is it actually as smooth as DJI claims or does it still require a lot of rehearsal with your camera op before it clicks

made the jump about eight months ago and honestly the dual operator thing was the biggest adjustment, not the camera side. if your camera op isnt used to working with a separate pilot there's a learning curve that can genuinely eat into your shooting days early on. we spent probably two full prep days just doing dry runs before our first real gig with it. but once it clicks it really does feel like operating a proper cinema camera in the air, the way the X9 renders motion wide open is just different from anything the X5R could do.

for doc work specifically i will say the form factor can be a bit much depending on your access situation, its not exactly a run and gun setup. but if you're doing anything with a proper AC and a small crew its totally fine, people just kind of accept it now. the Inspire 3 reads as serious gear on set which weirdly helps sometimes.

the X9-8K raw output is insane but dont sleep on how much that affects your post pipeline, make sure your DIT or whoever handles your media knows whats coming because those files are not small and the ProRes RAW HQ workflow needs some planning. saw a production get caught out on that on a job last spring, nearly lost a day sorting storage.
