flying in wind ? how do you actually get better at it

  • Members

so ive been flying for about a year now mostly in calm conditions because honestly wind just stresses me out. took my mini 3 pro out last weekend and it was maybe 15mph gusts and i felt completely out of control even though the drone was technically fine. like i could see it was compensating but my inputs were all over the place, overcorrecting constantly.

im wondering if there's like a structured way to get better at flying in wind or if its just one of those things where you go out and suffer through it until it clicks. do people practice specific maneuvers in wind or just do normal flying and let it come naturally. i feel like im missing something fundamental about how to read what the drone is doing vs what the wind is doing to it.

honest answer ? yeah you just kind of suffer through it until it clicks, but there are ways to suffer smarter. what helped me was picking one maneuver and doing only that in wind instead of trying to fly normally. like just slow sideways passes, back and forth, and really watching how much correction you need to hold a straight line. your brain starts building a model of the lag and the drift without you even realizing it.

also worth noting that 15mph gusts and 15mph steady are totally different beasts. gusts are harder because the compensation the craft is doing keeps changing. once you can hold a clean line in steady 15 you're actually in decent shape. the overcorrecting thing is super normal and it just takes repetitions, theres no shortcut really. also try flying with your back to the wind sometimes so the drift is pushing toward you instead of away, changes how you think about it.

i had the same problem and what actually helped me was going to a big open field with like a tree or a fixed point and trying to just hover in one spot over it for a few minutes. sounds boring but watching the aircraft fight to stay put teaches you a lot about how it handles gusts. you start anticipating instead of reacting.
