first real race this weekend, anything i should know that nobody tells you

been flying for about 14 months, mostly freestyle but ive been getting more into gates and timing runs in the last few months and a friend talked me into entering an actual MultiGP chapter race this weekend. im not expecting to podium obviously, im just trying to not embarrass myself too badly and maybe learn something

running a standard 5inch on betaflight 4.4, F7 stack, Xing2 2207s, Crossfire for link. video is Walksnail which i know some people have opinions about at races but it should be fine for my purposes

i guess my questions are more about the logistics and unwritten rules than the flying itself. like how early should i get there, how does the frequency coordination actually work in practice, is there etiquette around the impound area, stuff like that. also do most chapter races have tech inspection and if so what are they actually looking for, ive seen wildly different answers online

also should i bother changing my tune before the race or just leave it where it is since its been flying well

dont change your tune the week of a race, that's the number one thing. you want to show up with a quad you know, not one you've been fighting with for three days trying to dial in last minute changes. if it's flying well now just leave it and focus on flying

get there early, like an hour before registration closes if you can. frequency coordination at most chapter races is pretty informal, you'll get assigned a band and channel when you check in and just stick to it, no drama. impound varies a lot by event but generally just dont touch other peoples quads without asking, pretty obvious stuff. tech inspection at the chapter level is usually pretty relaxed, they're mostly looking for that your motor size is within class limits and your video transmitter power isnt going to toast everyone else's feed. 25mw is usually the cap indoors and some venues go up to 200mw outdoors but check your specific event rules

honestly the biggest thing is just talk to people. the racing community at the local level is usually pretty welcoming to new guys, most people remember what their first race was like

Walksnail at a race is fine, ignore anyone who gives you grief about it. the only thing worth double checking is your vtx power output and that your goggles arent set to a channel thats going to bleed into someone elses feed. had a guy at our last race running way too hot on his analog transmitter and it was washing out half the field, so just be mindful of that

also bring more batteries than you think you need and a decent charger setup. races always run late and if you only have four packs you might be sitting around for an hour between heats with nothing to fly
