FAA finally doing something about the remote ID thing or are we still waiting

  • Members

so i've been half following the remote ID enforcement stuff and honestly its hard to keep track of whats actually happening vs whats just people panicking on reddit. my understanding is the deadline passed a while ago but i still see guys at my local field flying older quads with no module and nothing seems to happen. are the rules actually being enforced now or is it still kind of a soft rollout situation

i did buy a remote ID module for my older 5 inch but setting it up was kind of a pain and im not totally sure its broadcasting correctly. is there a way to verify it actually works without just trusting the light on the thing

enforcement is pretty spotty from what i can tell. the FAA has said theyre focusing on education over fines for now but that could change. ive heard of a couple cases where people got contacted after flying near sensitive areas but casual park flying seems to still be mostly ignored. that said i wouldnt count on it staying that way, the infrastructure for checking this stuff is slowly getting built out.

for verifying your module there are a few apps that can read remote ID broadcasts, Drone Scanner is one that works reasonably well. just have a friend open it while your quad is powered up and see if it shows up. if it does you're probably good.

i asked about this at my flying club last month and even the guys who've been doing this for years seemed confused about exactly where the line is. one guy said his FRIA site exempts them but someone else said that only covers certain aircraft and it got into a whole thing lol. the module app tip is helpful though i didn't know you could actually verify it like that
