flying in wind — when do you just give up and land

  • Members

so ive been flying my mavic 3 for about a year and a half now and wind is still the thing that messes me up the most. not just the fpv stuff, even just regular cruising around. i feel like i have no consistent rule for when to push through vs when to just bring it down and call it a day.

last weekend i was out at this open field and the gusts were probably hitting 25-28mph on and off, the drone was holding position fine in sport mode but i kept having to overcorrect manually when i tried to actually do anything purposeful with the sticks. ended up with footage that looked like it was filmed on a boat. not unusable but definitely not what i wanted.

is there some threshold you guys go by or is it more of a feel thing after enough hours? i know the spec sheet says it can handle up to like 38mph or whatever but that number feels pretty optimistic honestly

yeah that 38mph rating is basically the drone surviving, not the drone flying well. i think of it as two totally different things. mine holds position in high wind no problem but any kind of intentional movement turns into a mess because its constantly fighting to maintain attitude and theres lag between your input and what actually happens.

my rough rule is if the gusts are more than about 15mph above the steady wind speed — like if its blowing 15 steady but spiking to 30 — i land. its the inconsistency that gets you, not the raw number. a steady 25 is way more manageable than a variable 10-25 in my experience. also flying lower helps a ton, wind is usually calmer closer to the ground especially near treelines

honestly i just go by feel too and i have way less hours than you probably. but one thing that helped me was practicing in moderate wind on purpose instead of always waiting for calm days. like deliberately going out in 15-18mph and just doing slow figure eights and trying to hold a specific heading. felt stupid at first but after a few sessions my muscle memory for compensation got a lot better. still bail when its really gusty though, not worth the stress
