trying to learn cinematic orbits and i cant get them smooth — what am i missing

okay so this has been bugging me for a while. i watch videos of people doing these perfect slow orbits around a subject and it looks effortless and then i try it and either the radius drifts or the subject wanders out of frame or the whole thing just looks wobbly. im not using any automated orbit mode, trying to do it full manual because i actually want to learn the stick coordination properly.

im on a dji air 2s if that matters, mode 2. the basic idea i understand — right stick for the lateral movement, left stick for yaw to keep pointing at the subject. but in practice especially if theres any wind at all i lose the subject within like 15 seconds. do i just need way more practice or is there something specific i should be drilling first

this took me forever too. the thing nobody really tells you is that manual orbits require you to constantly adjust all three axes at once and its not intuitive at all until it just clicks. what helped me was starting way farther from the subject than feels right — like embarrassingly far, maybe 40-50 meters out — because the slower apparent movement gives you more time to correct. also pick a subject that has a really obvious visual center so your brain isnt guessing where to point. a tree works better than a building for practice because theres usually a clear top

wind makes everything worse obivously. i practiced the pure stick coordination on calm mornings for probably a month before i started adding any wind into the mix

the drift issue is usually radius creep — your lateral input is slightly off from what youre losing or gaining on yaw and it compounds. one drill i did was just holding a stationary point hover in wind for like 5 minutes and really internalizing how much correction is needed before even attempting orbits. if you cant hold a rock-solid hover in moderate wind the orbit is gonna fall apart fast. not saying thats your problem but thats where id start
