ok so i bought a DJI Mini 4 Pro like two weeks ago and it's been sitting in the box because honestly i'm kind of intimidated. i watched a bunch of youtube videos but they all assume you already know stuff. like what does ATTI mode even mean and why does everyone keep warning about it. also do i need to register it before i even turn it on or can i just fly it in my backyard first to get a feel for things. im in the US by the way. sorry if these are dumb questions i just dont want to break it on the first flight or get in trouble somehow

not dumb questions at all, everyone starts here. the registration thing — yes you technically need to register with the FAA before you fly it outdoors, it's like $5 and takes maybe 10 minutes on the DroneZone website. you'll get a number you have to put on the drone. the Mini 4 Pro is under 250g so it falls under a slightly different category but you still need TRUST certification at minimum if you're flying recreationally. just do it before you fly, not worth the headache otherwise.

as for ATTI mode, honestly don't worry about that yet. it's basically when the drone loses GPS and starts drifting with the wind instead of holding position. the Mini 4 Pro will almost always be in positioning mode when you're outside with a good signal so you probably won't encounter it for a while. just fly somewhere open, away from trees, and take it slow. the beginner mode in the DJI Fly app actually limits speed and altitude which is genuinely useful when you're starting out, i'd leave that on for at least the first few sessions.

yeah what the other person said about registration is right. also one thing nobody told me when I started — check the DJI Fly app before you even unfold the props. there's almost always a firmware update when you first set it up and if you try to fly without doing it the app sometimes won't let you arm the motors anyway. kind of annoying but better to deal with it at home than standing in a field waiting for it to download on your phone's data
