my best shot yet was also almost my worst day — long story

okay so this is partly a brag and partly a cautionary tale i guess. was out in the hills last tuesday doing some orbit shots around this old abandoned water tower which looks incredible from the air btw, really eerie. anyway im mid-orbit maybe 60 meters up and i get a low battery warning way earlier than i expected, think i forgot to fully charge the night before or something.

had to cut the shot short and bring it in fast but right as im landing the wind picked up out of nowhere and the drone drifted into some tall grass at the edge of the field. no damage thankfully, but my heart was going. the thing is the footage from right before the abort was genuinely the best ive ever captured. that orbit with the late afternoon light coming through the structure was just... yeah. not sure whether to feel good or terrible about the whole thing

anyone else had a near miss that still produced killer footage

haha yes this is like every good shot ive ever gotten has some disaster attached to it. one time i was filming a frozen lake at sunrise and the return to home triggered because i had a weak gps signal and it almost landed in the water. the clip right before that happened is my profile picture now so

you should really get in the habbit of checking battery charge before you head out, sounds obvious but i have a little checklist on my phone now cause i kept forgetting stuff. anyway glad you didnt lose the drone though and yeah post the water tower footage cause that sounds like exactly the kind of creepy atmospheric shot i like seeing. was it fully abandoned or did it look like someone still uses it
