finally tried the Walksnail Avatar after years on DJI ? some thoughts

so ive been running DJI O3 for a while now and honestly thought i wouldnt bother switching but my buddy lent me his Avatar HD goggles for a weekend and i gotta say the experience is different in ways i didnt expect. the latency feels comparable in normal flying conditions, not noticeably worse to me anyway, but the image quality has this different character to it ? like DJI feels cleaner/sharper but Avatar has better color rendering? hard to describe. i fly mostly proximity stuff in trees and the penetration through foliage was actually slightly better on Avatar in my informal testing, though i wouldnt call it a controlled experiment by any stretch.

the goggle comfort is where i think DJI still wins. the foam on the Avatar goggles felt cheaper and i had to fiddle with IPD way more than i expected. also the antenna placement on the Avatar VTX felt a bit awkward to route on my build but thats probably a me problem.

anyway not really a question just wanted to hear if others have gone back and forth between these two systems and what their experience was. im not sold on switching yet but im not as dismissive as i was before.

yeah the color thing you noticed is real, its something a lot of people bring up when they come from DJI. the Avatar pipeline just handles color grading differently and some people really prefer it especially for recording DVR. the DVR quality on Avatar is genuinely better imo.

on the antenna side though if you havent already its worth swapping out the stock antennas on the Avatar system, the ones that come with it are fine but throwing on a couple lollipop or even pagoda style omnis made a noticeable difference for me in range before i hit any kind of dropout. the VTX on Avatar also runs warmer than i expected so make sure you have airflow on it if its buried in a tight frame.

i went the other direction, started on Avatar and tried DJI O3 for a month. honestly couldnt get used to how DJI locks you into their ecosystem for everything. like i get why people like it but having to use their app for everything annoyed me. went back to Avatar and havent looked back. the goggle thing is true though the build quality feels a step below but ive seen people do foam swaps and it helps a lot apparently.
