flying in costa rica next month — anyone done this?

  • Members

so im heading to costa rica for three weeks and obviously bringing the mavic. ive been trying to figure out the airspace rules there and its a complete mess to research. some sites say you need to register, some say you dont, some say national parks are totally off limits which honestly makes sense but i cant find an official source that isnt three years old.

anyone actually flown there recently? specifically around the osa peninsula and maybe arenal. would love to know what the vibe is on the ground too, like are locals chill about it or do rangers actually come after you

flew there in january, arenal area specifically. didnt register and nobody said a word. the national park thing is real though, dont fly inside park boundaries, not worth the hassle. outside the parks people genuinely dont care. got some insane shots over the rainforest near la fortuna, fog rolling in at sunrise was unreal.

DGAC is the civil aviation authority there, thats who you'd register with if you want to do it properly. honestly the rules exist on paper but enforcement is pretty inconsistent from what i understand. i'd still look up the no fly zones on the app before each flight just to be safe, some areas near the airports are tighter than you'd expect for a small country.
