BNF quads and the whole "ready to fly" thing ? am i expecting too much

okay so maybe this is a dumb question but i picked up a prebuilt BNF quad, not gonna say which one yet because i dont want this to turn into a brand thing, and the tune on it is just... not great. rolls feel kinda mushy and theres this weird propwash on fast direction changes that i cant seem to dial out even after messing with the D term for a few hours.
my question is basically are prebuilts always like this or did i just get unlucky. i kinda assumed BNF meant someone had already done the hard work and it would at least be in the ballpark of a good tune. my homebuilt stuff doesnt fly like this and i built that from scratch with a filter stack and everything. starting to feel like i paid for the convenience and got the worst of both worlds lol
running betaflight 4.4 btw and havent touched RPM filter settings yet, maybe thats part of it
