flying in mexico -- do i even need to register or what

taking a trip to the yucatan in a couple months and want to bring the air 3. ive been trying to figure out the rules and honestly every website i find says something slightly different and some of it looks way out of date. i know the US rules inside out at this point but international stuff is confusing me.

from what i can tell mexico has their own aviation authority (AFAC i think?) and technically you're supposed to register but ive seen people on here say they just flew without doing anything and were totally fine. not sure if i want to risk having it confiscated at customs tho. anyone done this recently and can tell me what actually happens in practice vs what the rules say on paper

i brought mine to tulum last year and just declared it at customs, they didnt even blink. never registered with anyone. flew on the beach early mornings before it got crowded and nobody said a word. probably depends a lot on where exactly you're flying though, near ruins or cenotes inside the parks is a whole different situation, they are pretty strict about that

the AFAC registration thing is real but enforcement is basically nonexistent for tourists with small drones from what i understand. that said i wouldnt fly anywhere near Chichen Itza or any INAH site without explicit permission because they will absolutely shut you down and possibly keep your gear. stick to the coast and use common sense and you'll probably be fine. probably.
