Skyzone 04X vs DJI O3 goggles ? is the analog vs digital thing still even worth debating

  • Members

so ive been running a pair of fat sharks for like 4 years now and theyre starting to show their age, one of the screens has this weird flickering thing on the left side that comes and goes, and ive been putting off replacing them because honestly the whole market feels like it shifted pretty fast in the last couple years and i dont even know where to start

my main quads are all analog right now, running a mix of rush solo and rush tank vtx depending on the build, and i fly mostly 5 inch freestyle with a couple of longrange wings. the question is whether i just get a new analog headset like the skyzone 04X or bite the bullet and switch over to digital and rebuild everything around O3 or walksnail

the 04X looks genuinely good on paper, the OLED panels are supposed to be a big step up from the old fat shark dominators and the diversity receiver handles my crossover flying situations pretty well from what ive read. but then you look at the O3 image quality and its just not a fair comparison anymore if im being honest

cost isnt a dealbreaker but its definitely a factor, like id rather not drop $500+ on goggles and then another $80-100 per quad to retrofit vtx units if the benefit over a good analog setup isnt as big in actual practice as it looks on youtube

anyone running the 04X who came from fat sharks, what was the actual adjustment like

ran fat shark hdos2 for two years then switched to the 04X about eight months ago and honestly the OLED difference is real, not a marketing thing. the black levels especially at dusk are just way better for reading terrain. diversity works well but the receiver modules are kind of fiddly to swap if youre bouncing between different band setups

that said if youre already thinking about digital i wouldnt bother with a new analog headset at this point. the 04X is a good goggle but you can feel it kind of hitting a ceiling when the signal gets marginal, youre still getting that analog snow and breakup and once youve flown O3 in a bad multipath environment you really notice the difference. walksnail is worth looking at too, cheaper ecosystem and the latency gap closed a lot in recent firmware

if the budget is there id honestly just pick one quad to convert first and see how you feel about the workflow before committing the whole fleet

the vtx cost per quad thing is real and people kind of underestimate it when they do the math. like yeah the goggles are the big ticket item but then you start adding up 4 or 5 quads at $80-100 a piece and suddenly youre way deeper into this than you planned. im in the same situation tbh, been stalling on the decision for months
