harsh feedback welcome — trying to get better at composition not just flying

  • Members

ive been flying my air 2s for like 8 months and technically im pretty comfortable now, can do manual orbits, decent reveals, all that stuff. but when i watch my footage back it just feels kinda... flat? like the flights look smooth but the actual shots dont tell a story or whatever. a friend who does photography said my compositions are boring and i think shes right but i dont fully understand what to fix

mostly been shooting countryside stuff, fields, old farm buildings, that kind of thing. not sure if im just picking bad subjects or if its how im framing things. anyone been through this and figured out what made the difference for them

yeah i went through exactly this. for me the thing that helped most was watching a lot of cinematography stuff that had nothing to do with drones, like actual film breakdowns on youtube. you start to notice leading lines and foreground interest and then you go back out flying and suddenly you're looking for those things instead of just looking for a cool subject to hover over

also try flying lower than feels comfortable. most drone footage looks the same because everyone defaults to that 60-80 foot overhead look. get down near the hedgerows or whatever and suddenly the fields actually have depth

honestly just shoot more and watch it back critically, thats kinda it. sounds annoying but i dont think theres a shortcut. i also started screenshotting frames from films i like and trying to recreate the framing with the drone which sounds dumb but actually works
