flying in Iceland next month, any tips?

  • Members

so ive been planning this Iceland trip for like 8 months and im finally going in february. bringing my mini 3 pro obviously but honestly i have no idea what the rules are over there. ive heard its pretty open but also heard some areas around the national parks are restricted and i dont want to get my drone confiscated or whatever on day 2 of the trip.

anyone actually flown there recently? the wind situation also kind of scares me a bit, ive seen videos where gusts just come out of nowhere near the coast and im not exactly confident in crosswinds yet. any spots that were worth it or totally not worth the hassle?

went in october, the wind is no joke. like genuinely had a moment near Vik where i almost lost the drone, it was showing 40+ kph and i thought i was good but then it just got worse really fast. check the Vedur app, its the icelandic weather service and its way more accurate than whatever windy.com says for that area.

rules wise you need to register with the icelandic transport authority thing, ICETRA, its not that bad though took me like 20 mins. national parks are restricted so dont even try near Thingvellir unless you have a permit which apparently takes weeks to get approved. Skogafoss and the black sand beach near Jokulsarlon were totally fine when i went though, just stay under 120m and away from people.

cant help with the rules stuff but just want to say the footage people get there is insane, jealous of your trip lol. bring way more batteries than you think you need because the cold drains them so fast, like half the capacity sometimes if its really cold out
