okay so i just got my first real drone, nothing fancy just a mini 3 pro, and ive been wanting to fly around some areas near downtown but i keep reading conflicting stuff about what i actually need to do before i can fly. like i know theres rules but i dont fully understand if i need to like... apply for something or if i can just go? someone at the park told me i need authorization but another guy on youtube said just check the app and go. who do i believe lol

i downloaded B4UFLY and it shows a bunch of colors but i dont really understand what the orange vs red means in practice. do i just not fly anywhere that isnt green? that seems like it would rule out like half the places i actually want to shoot

so the short version is - orange usually means you need authorization before you fly, not that you flat out cant. thats where LAANC comes in. if the airspace is LAANC-enabled you can request authoriza

so the short version is - orange usually means you need authorization before you fly, not that you flat out cant. thats where LAANC comes in. if the airspace is LAANC-enabled you can request authorization through apps like Aloft or even right in the DJI fly app sometimes, and a lot of the time you get approved basically instantly for lower altitudes. red is a different story, that often means its either restricted military airspace or a national park or something where recreational flying just isnt allowed period, no workaround.

the B4UFLY app is fine for a quick check but i'd honestly use the FAA DroneZone map alongside it just to get more detail on whats actually going on in a specific area. once you do it a couple times it becomes second nature, first time is always the confusing part

yeah i was in the exact same spot like 6 months ago, the color system threw me off too. what helped me was just picking one spot i wanted to fly and going through the whole process manually for that one location so i could see how it all connected. turns out the area near me was controlled airspace but LAANC covered it and i got approval in like 30 seconds through Aloft. felt almost too easy

just dont skip the authorization step even if you think nobody is watching, a couple guys in my area got warnings from local authorities and it wasnt worth the hassle
