got my first real paid inspection job and had no idea what i was getting into

so anyway i finally landed what i thought was going to be a pretty straightforward gig — aerial inspection of a commerical roof for an insurance company. figured id done plenty of rooftop shots before, no big deal. what i did not account for was how different it is when someone is actually depending on your footage to make a real business decision. the project manager kept asking me about specific areas and damage patterns and i just... wasn't really prepared for that conversation.

i got the shots they needed i think, but i felt pretty out of my depth on the communication side. like technically i flew fine but i didnt really know what i was supposed to be documenting or how to talk about what i was seeing. ended up just delivering everything and letting them sort it out which felt kind of unprofessional.

anyone else go through this learning curve? i want to keep pursuing inspection work because the pay was genuinely good, just feels like theres a whole knowledge base i'm missing about how to actually serve these clients properly

yeah this is a real thing and honestly most people don't talk about it enough. flying the drone is like 20% of the job on inspection work. the rest is understanding what the client actually needs, knowing enough about roofing or whatever structure to communicate intelligently, and delivering data in a format they can actually use. i did a handful of solar panel inspections before i realized i had no idea what thermal anomalies i was even supposed to flag. spent a few weeks just reading up on the industry and it made a massive difference in how confident i felt on site.

the good news is clients in that space are usually pretty forgiving if you're clearly trying to do right by them. most of them have worked with pilots before who just handed over a USB drive and disappeared.

what drone were you using if you dont mind me asking? im curious whether they wanted thermal or just RGB. ive been trying to get into inspection work and cant quite figure out if i need to invest in a thermal payload first or if regular visual inspections are enough to get started
