so anyway was out in the smoky mountains last weekend, first time flying in that kind of terrain and man i was not prepared for how weird the wind gets between the ridgelines. was getting some nice footage of the valley and then out of nowhere it just started drifting hard and the signal got choppy. ended up triggering RTH which thank god worked but it landed like 40 feet from where i was standing on a slope and i had to scramble through brush to get to it

battery was at like 8% when it touched down. whole thing probably took 10 years off my life. i think i underestimated how altitude and terrain messes with everything. fly more conservatively in the mountains than you think you need to, thats my takeaway

yeah mountain flying is no joke. the thermal activity alone can throw off your altitude hold and the GPS can get a little weird too depending on the ridgeline blocking satellites. i always keep a much higher RTH altitude set when im in that kind of terrain, learnt that the hard way in colorado a couple years back

dude that sounds terrifying. 8% is way too close. i try not to let mine go below 25-30% when im somewhere i cant easily retrieve it if something goes wrong. probably being overly cautious but after reading stuff like this im keeping that habit lol
