RPM filter making my quad feel sluggish or is that just me

  • Members

so anyway i finally got betaflight 4.4 dialed in on my new build after like three weekends of fiddling and overall its flying pretty well but something feels off. throttle response feels a little mushy, not terrible but compared to my other quad (older 4.2 tune) there's definitely something different. motors are running cool, props are balanced, vtx and cam are the only things sharing power which shouldnt be an issue.

a guy at my local field said maybe the RPM filter is over-filtering and eating into the snappiness. i never really dug into that stuff before, i mostly just run the sliders and call it a day. is there a good way to tell if thats whats happening without going full blackbox deep dive, because i find blackbox kind of overwhelming honestly. or is there something else i should check first before blaming the filters

yeah RPM filter latency is a real thing and 4.4 defaults can be a bit conservative depending on your setup. the easiest thing before going full blackbox is just bumping your D term filters up slightly

yeah RPM filter latency is a real thing and 4.4 defaults can be a bit conservative depending on your setup. the easiest thing before going full blackbox is just bumping your D term filters up slightly and seeing if it changes the feel ? sometimes the filtering chain as a whole is just a bit heavy. also check your D_min and D settings because if D is too high it can feel like the quad is fighting itself on quick inputs which reads as sluggish even though its technically working fine.

honestly though blackbox isnt as bad as it looks once you get the hang of it. PID Analyzer or the plasmatree tool do most of the work for you, you just need a couple clean throttle chops and some oscillation checks. took me a while to get into it but its the only way to really know whats going on

could also just be the motor timing or a props issue tbh. what motors and what props are you running? some combos just dont feel as snappy regardless of tune, ive had setups that felt great on one prop pitch and weirdly flat on another even with identical tune. probably worth ruling out the physical stuff before spending hours in betaflight configurator
