been doing cell tower work for about a year now and im still not 100% happy with my setup. running a M3E right now and the zoom is decent but i keep running into situations where im trying to get a close look at a mount or connector and i just cant tell if theres actual corrosion or just grime. the 162mm equiv on the tele gets me close but sometimes its still not quite there especially on taller towers where you really dont want to be flying too close to all that RF.

anyone running a Zenmuse Z30 or similar on a Matrice for this kind of work? i know the Z30 is kind of old at this point but the optical zoom is genuinely useful for standoff distance. just not sure if the image quality holds up well enough for actual documentation that clients want to see. also curious if anyone has had interference issues near active antennas, had a weird compass error situation a couple weeks ago that kind of freaked me out mid-inspection.

Z30 guy here, been using it on an M300 for tower work for about two years. honestly the image quality is not going to win any awards but for documentation and flagging issues it is more than adequate. the real advantage is exactly what you said ? standoff distance. i can sit at a comfortable 15-20m and still see if a jumper cable is chafing against the steel. clients rarely complain about the footage quality because they care about the report not the cinematography.

the RF interference thing is real though. i always check which antennas are active before the flight if i can get that info from the tower crew. had an M300 go into atti mode near a particularly loud 700mhz setup once. wasnt catastrophic but definitely got my attention. i now keep RTH altitude set aggressively and make sure im never directly above an active panel if i can help it.

not a tower guy specifically but i do a lot of high voltage transmission line work and the interference thing comes up constantly. one thing that helped me was switching to a more conservative GPS refresh and honestly just trusting the aircraft less in those environments ? meaning i stay more on manual inputs rather than letting it hold position. also the M3E is probably fine but if your clients are big telecoms they may eventually ask about thermal on the mounts, seen a few RFPs lately that specifically want dual sensor capability for identifying heat issues at connectors
