finally starting to get comfortable flying in wind but still feel like im fighting it

so ive been flying for about 8 months now mostly calm days in sport mode on my fpv freestyle build and i feel pretty solid on those days. but anytime there's any real wind ? like even 12-15mph ? i feel like im just reacting constantly instead of actually flying. like i'll set up for a dive and then get pushed sideways and have to over-correct and the whole line goes to garbage.

ive heard people say you should "fly the wind" but i honestly dont know what that actually means in practice. do you preemptively lean into gusts or do you just let the quad handle it and make small corrections? im running a 5inch with betaflight, filters are tuned decently i think, rates are like 600 deg/s on roll and pitch. not sure if this is a tune thing or just a skill thing or both. any thoughts would help

tune probably isnt helping if its not dialed. wind exposes bad tune way more than calm air does. if youre getting prop wash or oscillations on corrections those get way worse when youre also fighting

yeah "fly the wind" is one of those things people say that sounds profound and means almost nothing until youve already figured it out lol. for me what clicked was just accepting that in wind your horizon is constantly shifting and you have to fly relative to the air mass not relative to the ground. like if theres a consistent crosswind just add a tiny bit of permanent roll input in that direction and let yourself drift slightly rather than fighting to hold a dead-straight line. the line can still look clean even if its not perfectly geometric.

the other thing that helped me a ton was just deliberately going out on windy days and not trying to do anything impressive. just hovering, doing slow figure eights, holding position manually. boring as hell but after a few sessions i stopped flinching at gusts.
