so ive been flying a DJI mini for about a year and honestly im kind of bored with it, like its great for photography stuff but i want to actually fly something fast and fun. been watching a ton of FPV content and i think i want to get into it but im already confused about whether i should just buy something prebuilt or go the custom build route

i looked at the DJI Avata and honestly it looks cool but people keep saying its not "real FPV" whatever that means, and then theres stuff like the Geprc Cinelog or the iFlight Nazgul but i dont even know where to start comparing those. my budget is probably around 400-500 dollars for the whole thing including a controller if thats even realistic, i honestly have no idea

do most people here recommend just picking up something prebuilt to learn on or is it worth learning to build from the start? i dont mind soldering i used to do some electronics hobby stuff years ago

honest answer ? if you can solder and you have any patience for troubleshooting, building is the way to go from the start. not because prebuilts are bad but because you WILL crash and you WILL need to fix things, and if you dont know whats in your quad you're going to be completely lost when something breaks. and something will break.

that said your budget is a little tight for a full custom 5inch build plus radio plus goggles if youre starting from zero. you might want to look at the Emax Tinyhawk series or even the BetaFPV Cetus kit for learning the basics without destroying expensive parts. get the muscle memory down first then build something proper. the Nazgul is a solid prebuilt for when you're ready to step up but throwing yourself into a 6s ripper on day one is a bad time

I was in the exact same spot like eight months ago. I ended up getting the iFlight Nazgul5 prebuilt and I dont regret it but I also crashed it into a concrete wall on day three and had to figure out how to replace a stack anyway lol so I kind of learned by necessity. if you have soldering experience honestly just build, theres so many guides on youtube for 5inch builds and you end up knowing every wire and screw on the thing which really helps when stuff goes sideways

also yeah the Avata thing, its fun but its a different vibe. more like a GoPro on rails than actual freestyle or racing. nothing wrong with it but people who say its not real FPV are kind of right in the sense that youre not in the same headspace flying it
