learning cinematic moves ? where do you even start

  • Members

okay so this might be a dumb question but i've watched probably a hundred youtube videos on cinematic drone moves and i still feel like im missing something fundamental. like i can do a basic reveal or a slow push-in but anything more complex ? the orbit, the dronie, especially the ones where youre combining movements ? it just falls apart.

is there an order you should learn these in? or do most people just pick a move and practice it to death until it clicks and then move on? i feel like im kind of jumping around and not making real progress. been at it for maybe 4 months, mostly in open fields which is probably part of the problem since theres nothing interesting to orbit around lol

also does flying with a subject that isnt moving make a huge difference vs trying to track something? cause most of my practice is with stationary stuff

orbits took me forever and honestly the thing that finally made it click was using a single tree or lamp post and doing nothing but orbits around it for like three sessions in a row. not moving on until i could do a full 360 at consistent speed and altitude without any visible wobble in the footage. stationary subject is definitely the right call to start ? moving subjects add like three more variables at once and its a recipe for frustration early on.

for combining moves id say get each axis of movement totally comfortable on its own first. yaw, pitch, roll, throttle ? all separate. once theyre individual you start layering two at a time. trying to do a tilting orbit with a slow descent before you can do a clean orbit is just going to create bad habits imo.

fields are actually not bad for learning technically but youre right that its harder to stay motivated. find a park with a distinctive tree or a building corner, even something boring like a water tower ? anything with a clear center point makes orbits way more useful to practice cause you can actually see if youre drifting. i spent way too long in a flat open field early on and thought i was getting good and then the first time i tried to orbit something real it was obvious i wasnt lol
