ok so i signed up for a local MultiGP race kind of on a whim after flying practice laps for about 8 months and i'm honestly not sure i'm ready but the entry fee was only like 15 bucks so whatever. i've been running a 5in freestyle build which i know isnt ideal for racing but ive tuned the pids pretty well and it handles clean. probably should have built something dedicated but here we are.

i know the basics ? i have my HAM license, goggles are on a legal frequency, i'll bring extra props and a few batteries. but i genuinely dont know what race day actually looks like. like do they do practice rounds before heats? how strict are people about impound? is everyone gonna be annoyed that im on a freestyle build. ive watched some race coverage but that obviously doesnt tell you what its like to actually be there standing in a pilot box nervous as hell trying not to crash in round 1.

also my DVR has been flaky lately, should i bother trying to fix it before saturday or just forget about it

MultiGP events are honestly pretty welcoming especially at the local level, dont stress too much. most races do a practice round or at least a warm up heat before the actual scored rounds, and the race director usually walks everyone through the format at the pilots meeting which happens right at the start so just pay attention to that and you'll be fine.

impound strictness varies a lot by event. some CDs are really by the book about it and some barely check. bring your frequency card just in case and have your video transmitter power set correctly before you show up, thats the one thing that actually matters to them. freestyle build is totally fine, youll see all kinds of stuff at a local race. might be a little heavier than the guys on dedicated race quads but honestly in the lower heat brackets nobody cares, everyone is just trying to finish clean.

fix the DVR if you can do it in like 20 minutes, if its gonna take longer just skip it. you wont regret not having footage of your first race but you will regret spending saturday morning frustrated over a ribbon cable when you could be chilling and getting your head right.

the nervous feeling in the pilot box never fully goes away fyi, even after doing this for years. just focus on one gate at a time and dont try to fly faster than you practiced. everyone crashes at their first race, like genuinely everyone, so just accept that going in and you'll enjoy the day a lot more.
