so ive been doing monthly progress shots for a mid-size construction company, mostly orthomosaics and some 3d models to show the client how things are moving along. been using DroneDeploy for about a year and its fine, does the job, but the subscription cost is getting harder to justify especially when the work isnt always consistent month to month.

started looking at Pix4D and honestly the processing seems more robust, like i can actually tweak the point cloud generation parameters which DD just kind of hides from you. but the learning curve is real and some of my deliverables need to be pretty quick turnaround.

curious what other people doing actual commercial mapping work are running. is anyone bouncing between both depending on the project or have you just committed to one. also wondering if the pix4d annual license is worth it if youre not doing this full time

been on Pix4D for about three years now and i dont think id go back. the control you get over the processing options is just on another level once you learn what youre doing. that said the first couple months i was genuinely confused about half the settings and probably produced some garbage outputs without realizing it. the quality report is your best friend, took me way too long to actually start reading those properly.

for construction specifically the annotations and volume measurements in PIX4Dsurvey are actually pretty solid now, they updated it a lot last year. if your clients are asking for cut/fill analysis or stockpile volumes it handles that well. DD is easier to hand off to a client who wants to poke around themselves though, their viewer is just more intuitive for non-technical people.

i use DD for the fast turnaround stuff and honestly for most construction progress reports the clients cant tell the difference in output quality anyway. where it falls apart for me is large sites with elevation changes, the stitching gets weird sometimes and i dont have enough control to fix it without jumping through hoops. might actually try pix4d on the next big one just to compare
