Inspire 2 still worth it in or am I just holding onto old gear

so ive been running an Inspire 2 with the Zenmuse X7 for about 4 years now doing mostly commercial work, some real estate but mostly short-form doc stuff and the occasional music video. thing has been an absolute workhorse but im starting to wonder if im leaving quality on the table compared to what clients are expecting now.

the X7 is still genuinely impressive glass dont get me wrong, 6K CinemaDNG when the licensing is sorted is hard to argue with. but ive had two potential clients this year ask specifically about Inspire 3 or ask if i shoot on something "newer" which like... that shouldnt matter but it clearly does to them.

my main hesitation with going Inspire 3 is the cost obviously, and also ive heard mixed things about the workflow with Zenmuse X9 footage. anybody actually cutting X9 RAW day to day in Resolve? is the file management as annoying as people say or is that overblown. genuinely just trying to figure out if i upgrade the body or sink that money into lighting and audio gear instead since thats probably where my productions actually suffer

the client perception thing is real and honestly kind of annoying. had the same conversation last year. ended up keeping my I2 for certain jobs and renting an I3 when the client specifically cared or when the shot required the improved low light. the X9-S in particular is a different beast in terms of dynamic range, not gonna pretend otherwise.

on the Resolve workflow ? it's not bad once you set up a proper project template. the full-frame RAW files are chunky but if your drive setup is decent you wont be pulling your hair out. the bigger thing nobody talks about is the color science, it just grades differently than X7 footage and takes a minute to get used to if youve been working with one look for years. give yourself a weekend to mess around before you take it into a paid job.

honestly i'd rent before committing to anything. i did a two day rental on an I3 earlier this year through a local house and it answered basically every question i had. the dual operator mode is slick when you actually have a dedicated camera op, but if youre flying solo most of the time the ergonomics of managing everything yourself is a bit much compared to what youre used to. X7 is still genuinely good glass, people have been saying its outdated for two years and the footage still holds up on broadcast.
