customs stopped me because of the drone batteries, long story

  • Members

ok so this finally happened to me after years of traveling with gear. coming back through miami from colombia and the customs guy flagged my bag because of the lipo batteries. i had 4 mavic batteries and 2 for the goggles all in my carry on like youre supposed to but he was convinced i needed some kind of special declaration or form. we went back and forth for like 20 minutes.

turns out he just didnt really know the rules himself and eventually a supervisor came over and cleared everything up immediately. but it was stressful and made me miss my connection. i always thought as long as theyre under 100wh and in the cabin youre fine, and i was right, but just be prepared for someone at the checkpoint to not know that. thinking about printing out the TSA/FAA guidelines and keeping them in my bag now just in case

the printed guidelines thing is actually smart, ive heard this advice before and never done it. gonna do it now. also worth knowing the watt hours on each battery so you can answer immediately if they ask, some agents respond better if you just sound confident and know your numbers off the top of your head

ugh this is my nightmare scenario. i flew through dubai once and was just waiting for someone to say something the whole time. nobody did but i was sweating. i feel like its such a lottery depending on who you get at the checkpoint
