finally built my first 5inch freestyle quad ? some things i wish someone told me

so i finally finished my first proper custom build after about 3 months of watching videos and reading posts on here. figured id share some stuff that tripped me up in case anyone else is going through the same thing.

i went with a TBS Source One v5 frame, ran Betaflight on a SpeedyBee F405 stack, 2306 2450kv motors with 45A ESCs, and a Caddx Ratel2 for the camera. honestly the camera choice was probably the best decision i made, image is really clean even in low light.

the thing that took me forever and nobody really explains clearly ? soldering the XT60 and getting the ESC power leads clean without bridging anything. i watched like 6 different videos and still had to redo it twice. also the motor order in Betaflight tripped me up, i had two motors spinning the wrong direction and my quad was doing backflips on the bench before i figured out what was happening.

tuning is a whole other beast. i started with the defaults and it felt okay-ish but there was this mid-throttle oscillation that was driving me insane. ended up dropping D term a bit and raising the filtering cutoffs and it mostly went away. still feels a little mushy in fast rolls but im not sure if thats the tune or just me being bad.

anyway if anyone has questions about the specific parts or wants to know what id do differently just ask

that motor direction thing catches literally everyone the first time. what i do now is just check motor order and spin direction in the motors tab before i even solder anything to the frame, saves a lot of hassle. also for the mid throttle oscillation ? did you check if dynamic idle was enabled? sometimes thats the culprit before you even touch D term. good build tho, Source One is a solid frame for the money

im actually in the middle of almost the exact same build right now, different stack but same frame. the soldering part is what im dreading most honestly. did you use flux or just regular rosin core solder? i feel like ive seen people go back and forth on whether flux pens are worth it and i cant tell if its just preference or if it actually matters that much for the XT60
